Description
Original air date:  June 16, 2016.  Juror Perceptions on Race & Gender:  Making the Business Case for Diversity

It would be naïve to pretend, given the history of race and gender relations in the U.S. and the current media coverage on issues of race and gender disparity, that race and gender dynamics do not make their way into every part of our lives.  When entering the courtroom such biases certainly come into play and the need for diversity is no less important in that setting.  These groups of six to twelve “peers” can often be seen as a microcosm for questions of bias and diversity in society.  Facing opinioned individuals, including those with whom you work, as a person who does not look like what they, often unconsciously, expect a lawyer to be can create unnecessary obstacles.  This presentation will explore the current state of diversity in the legal profession and more specifically the world of intellectual property law, juror perceptions of race and gender and discuss the importance of diversity.  That is, diversity means more to the future of the legal profession that simply hitting the diversity numbers.  Presented by Johanna Carrane of JuryScope, Inc.
